Malaysia’s first-ever Sports Physio & Rehab now launched,

co-founded by Lee Chong Wei

Malaysia welcomes the first and world-class Sports Physio & Rehab Centre – SOUL, co-founded by former national badminton player Datuk Lee Chong Wei together with Datuk Mike Tee Swee Guan, and Datuk Seri Lee Tian Hock. Located at 163 Retail Park, Mont Kiara, the rehab centre provides preventive care and rehabilitation for athletes and recreational sports people to achieve peak performance.

The event on Wednesday was witnessed by YB Hannah Yeoh, Minister of Youth & Sports of Malaysia, together with SOUL chief executive officer Datuk Mike Tee as well as co-founders Datuk Lee Chong Wei and Datuk Seri Lee Tian Hock.

Under the umbrella of MJHM Holdings Sdn Bhd, SOUL is a healthcare facility specialising in diagnosing, treating, and preventing injuries related to sports and physical activities. The objective is to help athletes recover from injuries and optimise their performances.

Given the overwhelming response for SOUL, even ahead of its opening, the Rehab Centre aims to expand its footprint in the North and South of Peninsular Malaysia. In addition, the centre is poised to groom more Malaysian physiotherapy professionals to cater to athletes and others.

Recreational physical activities and competitive athletics account for a significant number of injuries. Training during injury slows recovery and may cause an injury to never fully heal and continuously return. Hence, there is a pressing need for a specialised rehab centre in Malaysia.

SOUL’s prevention measures, such as proper movement coordination, strength and conditioning training, exercise technique, and regular movement screening, have two objectives: To reduce the risk of injury, and rehabilitate an injury as quickly as possible so that the athlete may return to peak performance.

Datuk Mike Tee, who is also the Chairman of MJHM Holdings Sdn Bhd, said that early detection and intervention could often prevent minor injuries from becoming major ones.

“With the high technology equipment and system, the centre can help improve people’s body posture and condition to avoid muscular pain. In addition, our qualified therapists and trainers are from Physiotherapy and Sport Science backgrounds, enabling us to provide accurate rehab and training plans.

“The 7,100 square feet flagship centre was designed with modern features that are different from the stereotypical image of a rehab centre. A total of RM3 million has been invested in this centre, and we look forward to establishing such centres in other states like Penang and Johor Bahru next year,” he added.

Datuk Lee Chong Wei said: “As a sportsman, I genuinely understand the importance of prevention and proper procedures for treating injuries. Therefore, establishing a rehab centre like this has been close to my heart for years and will be my priority after I retire from the sports industry. The centre will provide education on injury prevention techniques and strategies. We will also recommend appropriate equipment and training programmes to reduce the risk of injury.”

Datuk Sri Lee Tian Hock, who is also the president of Malaysian Basketball Association (MABA), commented that sports injuries are widespread among athletes.

“I have been thinking of ways to minimise the impact from injuries among basketball players, which has led to the setting up of SOUL today. We aim to perform regular physical condition assessments to identify potential risks and recommend corrective actions.”
